Use single-user mode to gain access to a system.

Logging into to single user mode allows you to access the system as root without a password. This is especially useful when you need to troubleshoot or gain access to a system in order to fix a problem.

In order to gain access to a system via single user mode you need to edit the grub menu. Once you’re at the grub menu, you’d want to edit the operating system you are trying to gain access to. Then you’ll typically see a few lines one of them being the kernel line. Once you have found this line append the number 1 to the end of the kernel line and boot from there.

Your system will now boot into single user mode.

Note* If you’re trying to change the root password on a system that has selinux enabled and are having a problem. Try setting the selinux to permissive mode and then changing the password.
